The sun descends toward the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow across the calm sea. Gentle waves reflect the light, creating soft highlights on the rippling water. Light clouds drift across the sky, and the entire scene conveys the quiet, natural serenity typical of Burnham‑on‑Sea.

From sunrise to sunset, may the name of the Lord be praised.

Psalm 113:3

This short film from Burnham-on-Sea was shot during one of those evenings when the light over the bay changes from minute to minute. The wind carried the scent of salt, the waves crashed against the shore, and two seagulls circled above the waterline, guiding the eye and the camera. It is a calm, natural scene — no music, no rush — just the sea, movement and light.

EN: The film shows a dynamic scene on the beach in Burnham-on-Sea. Rough waves crash with great force against the shore, and their sound dominates the entire footage. Above the bay, a heavy, cloudy sky is visible, through which the rays of the setting sun occasionally break through. Seagulls appear in the frame, flying over the waterline. The only words spoken in the film are short sentences in Polish: "Don't worry, she'll fly here. If not one, then the other." — a reference to the seagulls circling above the shore.EN: The video shows a dynamic scene on the beach in Burnham-on-Sea. Rough waves crash forcefully against the seawall, and the sound of the water dominates the audio. Heavy clouds hang over the bay, with occasional rays of the setting sun breaking through. Jak nie jedna, to druga." — referring to the seagulls flying overhead.

Burnham-on-Sea — sea, light and history

The beginnings of Burnham-on-Sea

Burnham-on-Sea has a history much older than its contemporary, peaceful appearance suggests. The town appears in King Alfred the Great’s will as a royal estate, which testifies to its importance in Anglo-Saxon times. It also appears in the Domesday Book as a small settlement belonging to a local magnate. For many centuries, Burnham remained a small fishing village centred around St Andrew’s Church. It was not until the late 18th century that it began to develop as a seaside resort, attracting the first tourists eager for fresh air and open space.

The sea that shapes the history of Burnham-on-Sea

The Great Flood of 1607

One of the most dramatic events in the region's history was the flood of 1607, when a huge wave broke through the embankments and flooded around thirty nearby villages. The water reached heights of up to 3–4 metres, and at least 28 people died in nearby Huntspill.

Distinctive features of Burnham-on-Sea

Low Lighthouse on the Beach — symbol miasta

It is this low lighthouse on stilts, one of the most recognisable structures in the whole of Somerset. It is wooden, stands directly on the sand and has a distinctive red vertical stripe. It is one of three lighthouses in Burnham on Sea, which for years formed a unique navigation system. The lighthouse looks completely different depending on the time of day and the state of the water: at low tide, it is surrounded by vast expanses of wet sand, and at sunset, it reflects the light in an almost theatrical way.

.

Three lighthouses

Burnham-on-Sea is unique in that it has three lighthouses:

    • High Lighthouse
    • Low Lighthouse
    • Low Lighthouse on the Beach (lighthouse on stilts)
    •

This system of three structures was once crucial for navigation in the difficult waters of Bridgwater Bay.

Kilometres of beach — the heart of Burnham-on-Sea

Burnham-on-Sea's greatest treasure is its vast, sandy beach, part of one of the longest stretches of sand in Europe. It is a place where you can walk endlessly — in silence, wind, light and space.

The beach changes with the tides:

  • at low tide, vast expanses of wet sand are exposed,
  • at high tide, the water can rise very high,
  • and during storms, the sea shows its violent side.

It is this variability of nature — from peaceful sunsets to powerful waves — that creates the true character of Burnham on Sea.

City life and contemporary character

From a 19th-century resort to today's tranquillity

In the 19th century, the first hotels were built here, including the Royal Clarence, and the town began to attract more and more visitors.

Today, Burnham-on-Sea is a peaceful resort with a cinema,

  • a cinema,
  • a theatre,
  • gardens,
  • local shops,
  • cafés and pubs,
  • Apex Park — 42 acres of greenery, popular with walkers and birdwatchers.

This is a place that does not try to compete with Weston-super-Mare. It simply offers peace, space and contact with nature.

Burnham on Sea Carnival

One of the oldest and largest light carnivals in the region is the Burnham on Sea Carnival, held every year in November. This event is full of light, music and local tradition, attracting thousands of spectators.

Burnham-on-Sea today — for those who want to slow down

If you don’t care about hustle and bustle, Burnham-on-Sea is the perfect choice. It is a town that allows you to experience the sea in its purest form: sometimes gentle, sometimes dangerous, but always real. It is a place you return to not only physically, but also in your thoughts — for the light, space and tranquillity. Finally, here are a few photos of this beautiful town.

That's all for this post.
