Once a familiar sight in cereal fields, today the cornflower is a highlight of naturalistic gardens and wildflower meadows. At Shugborough Estate, among historic borders, it evokes a nostalgic connection to the wild, pastoral landscape while serving as a valuable nectar plant attracting bees and butterflies.

And God said, "Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let dry land appear." And it was so. And God called the dry land earth, and the gathering of waters he called seas. And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth green plants: grass yielding seed, fruit trees bearing fruit according to their kind, in which is their seed upon the earth." And it was so.

The earth brought forth vegetation: grass bearing seed according to its kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

Genesis 1:9–13

The history and architecture of Shugborough Estate.

Shugborough Estate is a historic estate in Staffordshire, England, managed by the National Trust. It is a true paradise for lovers of history, art and nature, offering a wealth of landscapes, monuments, gardens and architecture. You can visit the 18th-century mansion, filled with extraordinary treasures collected by brothers Thomas and George Anson during their travels around the world and exploration of new lands, as well as the private apartments of Patrick Lichfield, renowned fashion photographer and 5th Earl of Lichfield. Don't forget to visit the basement, where you can learn about the life of the servants and see the original kitchen and laundry room. Outside, over 350 hectares of landscaped parkland, ancient woodland and unusual ornamental structures await you. In addition, you can see a working farm where Southdown sheep and Longhorn cattle are bred. For children, there is the Explorers' Wood playground, inspired by the maritime adventures of the estate's patron, Admiral George Anson. Shugborough Estate also has a café, tea room and gift shop. It is the perfect place for a family outing or a romantic getaway.

Architectural details.

Shugborough Hall was originally a compact, two-storey brick house built for William Anson, Earl of Lichfield, whose fortune was founded by Admiral Lord Anson, the 'father of the British Navy'. The flanking wings were added in 1748 by Thomas Wright. The house was enlarged around 1768 by James "Atenian" Stuart. It was then thoroughly rebuilt and enlarged again in 1790–8 and 1803–6 by Samuel Wyatt, and today Shugborough is largely the work of Wyatt. He enlarged Wright's low-lying wings to match the tall main block. He also added a massive Ionic portico and aligned it with the parapets of the wings, creating a strong horizontal emphasis across the entire façade. The west front was rebuilt in 1920 by Alun Mundy. The interior features fine Rococo and Neoclassical decoration, particularly in the dining room, where there is stucco decoration on the ceiling by Vassalli after Guido Reni. The beauty of the garden and the magnificent colours of the flowers at Shugborough Hall were the reason for this entry.
